“They are all most keen and enthusiastic to make these the best puppet films ever made. I too feel that this is a wonderful opportunity, and may well be the beginning of something big!”
-- Puppeteer, Joy Laurey. August 16th 1957 (Two weeks before filming commenced on The Adventures of Twizzle)

They were the worlds that launched a generation of childhoods; a rocket powered blend of action, adventure and explosions. They were worlds where cars could fly, horses could talk, and where it was better to avoid anything marked ‘atomic engine.’ They were the worlds of Supermarionation.

Filmed in Supermarionation: A History of the Future is the story as you've never heard it before, of the puppet empire that rose from the Slough Trading Estate in the 1960s and created television shows such as Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet, Fireball XL5 and Joe 90. Starting right at the beginning with a two-line advertisement, and finishing on the day the puppet studios closed in 1969, the book charts the rise and fall of the A.P. Films / Century 21 Organisation's 'Supermarionation' films.
The book features a wealth of new information, including many previously unseen photographs, and is based on hours of interviews with cast and crew, newspaper articles and previously unpublished paperwork.

Stephen La Rivière has stepped into the BIG RAT and taken on the brain patterns of someone who knows way too much about Supermarionation puppet shows. Previous puppet-related work includes the documentaries Full Boost Vertical: The Supercar Story and Stand By For Action, as well as writing for DeAgostini and Cards Inc on their Supermarionation related products.
Stephen’s other Classic TV credentials include various making-of documentaries for shows such as The Saint, The Champions, The Persuaders, Upstairs Downstairs and Danger UXB.
Stephen hopes that sales of the book will fund his dreams of living at a top-secret base, with a pet monkey, where he can carry out brain-washing experiments on 9-year-old children.
